Angelica Gomez is a global grad from Medellin, Colombia. She is in her second year in the Ph.D. program in Geography.
1. What made you choose UNC/NC when deciding on a program/place to study?
I decided to enter the Department of Geography because I was looking for skills that allow me to integrate environmental sciences and GIS technologies, and to incorporate a social dimension to my research. Also, I am interested in working in the tropics, and some of the Faculty in the department here also have research interests there.
2. What is the most different thing you’ve seen or experienced since being here in comparison to your home country?
Besides the language, the most different thing I have experienced here is the distance between places. In my home city, places are closer to each other.
- What is something you wish you had known before moving here?
I wish I had known more about American slang and ‘everyday’ English. However, I think it is great to learn ‘on the go’ because that also holds a lot of surprises and results in funny stories to tell.
- Where is a place in your home country that every tourist should visit and why?
Colombia offers a diversity of places, from mountains to coastal areas, and from towns to cities. I would recommend traveling to the coffee land, where you can see beautiful landscapes, taste coffee products, and enjoy the food diversity.
