Alex Rutgers is in the first year of Law School. He served as an Infantry and Intelligence Officer in the Army for six years.
1. What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed in transitioning from military life to civilian life?
The biggest difference I’ve noticed in transitioning from the Army is knowing that the future is wide open, and I both have the obligation and the opportunity to choose what to do with my life. I thought I was going to make a career in the Army, and not having the next 20 years planned out took some adjusting.
2. What is something you wish you had known before moving here?
Something I wished I had known before moving here was how fun and engaging UNC sports is. I went to a small school for undergrad, and am only now getting into the spirit of being a Tar Heels fan!
- What is an important lesson that you learned in the military that has helped you in grad school?
An important lesson I learned in Ranger school was the difference between doing my best, and just doing enough to think I was getting by. Putting that to use now in Law School, I can identify when I’m doing all that I can to absorb the material versus just enough to answer a question if called on. The feeling of knowing I’ve done all that I can is invaluable.
- What made you choose UNC/NC when deciding on a program/place to study?
I chose UNC because of the spirit of service that I found here. I know I want to continue service to the public with my degree, and here I know I’m in a culture and environment that is geared towards serving North Carolina, where I’ve made my home.
