Travis Wilson

Travis is a first year graduate student in the Environment, Ecology, and Energy Program and his research includes determining social interactions between marine bacteria by investigating the competitive phenotypes of microbes present in salt marsh ecosystems. Previously, he served for seven years as an aircraft turbine engine mechanic and paratrooper in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division.

What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed in transitioning from military life to civilian life?
Military members socialize differently than civilians.

What is something you wish you had known before moving here?
I wish I had bought a house in Carrboro. Housing prices are steadily increasing.

What is an important lesson that you learned in the military that has helped you in grad school?
Nap whenever you can.

What made you choose UNC/NC when deciding on a program/place to study?
I chose my program after having the opportunity to speak to the students in my current lab. Their research was interesting and they were passionate.
