What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed in transitioning from military life to civilian life?

I am still active duty and perhaps the biggest change is the absence of a formal authority structure. I often find it difficult to determine who is in charge of what – although that happens in the Navy too.

What is something you wish you had known before moving here?

Living a walkable distance to Franklin street isn’t all that great.

What is an important lesson that you learned in the military that has helped you in grad school?

Not everything is important, cut through the unimportant things, and focus on the overall mission.

What made you choose UNC/NC when deciding on a program/place to study?

I chose UNC because Gillings is one of the best programs in the world with amazing faculty and resources. Additionally, North Carolina has great resources in respect to public health and research.

How will your Carolina degree help you make a difference in the world?

My degree has developed my clinical research skills tremendously. I plan on applying those skills to my future positions in the Navy and hopefully make people healthier and happier.
